TITAN entrusted with safeguarding Titanic-era lifeboat
The SS Nomadic was a contemporary of the Titanic and is the last surviving vessel from the celebrated White Star Line. Discover how TITAN played a part in its story.
The challenge
Safely storing historical artefacts is something the TITAN UK team can easily handle thanks to a wide network of secure self storage depots in the country. But being asked to safeguard the last remaining lifeboat of the SS Nomadic was a special request even for us.
This 100-year-old emergency vessel was designed by Roderick Chisholm, chief draughtsman at Harland and Wolff shipbuilders, and could carry 28 passengers if disaster befell the Nomadic, a tender that ferried White Star Line passengers to larger boats such as the Titanic.
The lifeboat needed to be safely stored while the SS Nomadic underwent extensive restoration.
The solution
The last surviving lifeboat from the Nomadic was placed into one of our secure, dry, self storage units in Belfast until it was ready for its grand reappearance as part of the Maritime Belfast Trust’s Titanic Belfast visitor experience.
As all TITAN self storage units are 100% private, there were no client requests for special treatment. The lifeboat, once locked away, was as anonymous and hidden as any of the thousands of other consignments clients have stored at our depots.
The delivery
This priceless historical artefact was finally set free from her safe storage space at the end of 2023 to take centre stage alongside the SS Nomadic.
The results
The SS Nomadic and her last surviving lifeboat have been reunited and now offer visitors to the Titanic Belfast visitor experience a glimpse into a bygone era. TITAN is delighted to have played a part in their incredible story.
